Design from Pacific Rim Quilt Company, Tropical II

Old soul, new vision.

Peaks 27 dives into one of quilting’s most recognisable traditions — Hawaiian appliqué — and asks:
what happens when you see it with fresh eyes?

Do you remember making snowflakes with paper cutouts when you were a kid? We’re going to use those same skills to design your own Hawaiian applique. You can make one big block or smaller designs, whatever suits your style. You decide if you want a cushion cover, wall hanging, front for a bag, or a quilt in the size you chose.

We’re going to talk about the different elements that make up the designs, drawing inspiration from tradition and giving a twist where needed. You can choose one of the prepared patterns or free-style your own design. We will offer multiple methods of applique (it doesn’t have to be by hand!) and you decide which is your favourite.

We’ll also discuss quilting motifs, (again, it doesn’t HAVE to be by hand!) giving you some guidance to help truly make it your own.

One doesn’t have to use the entire symmetrical design to be effective. Portions of it, enlarged areas, all can be striking.

Our optional secondary project will be a Japanese method of “applique” called “Kinusaiga” (Key-New-Sigh-Ga). You can use your scraps from the A Project or any others you choose to bring. This too can have a very free-style look or you can choose from patterns we’ll have on hand. The foam board and double-sided paper will be supplied. You’ll need multiple scraps and a seam ripper. Finishing options will be discussed as well.

In addition to all this creativity, we’ll have the usual lovely meals made by someone else (always a Chef Extraordinaire), hot tub, massages onsite, Dice Swap with fat quarters, goodies & gadgets in the mobile quilt shop and more to get your creative juices going.

What do you need to bring?

A supply list will be provided but mostly, you just need fabric, thread, and your machine. We will have cutting stations, pressing stations, irons, rotary cutters & mats (though if you have a particular cutter you like, you should bring it). Quilt Fairy Clare & I will be happy to help you in any way we can. Clare will have The Craft House shop onsite as well, with a selection of Aurifil threads, Quilters Dream batting, and a variety of other sewing notions. Anything you need from the mini-mobile shop you you can put it on your Tab, to be settled up onsite at the end of Peaks.

Need a bit more encouragement? Your own Secret Sister will be there to cheer you on! You’ll be one too and we’ll have lots of ideas to help you help encourage each other. The total you spend on your little gifts should not exceed chf 20/ $20 so we’re talking really small things. Just little cute things to play along. Part of the fun is the secrecy!

In Europe, we have Suki the Juki, our sit-down longarm, to help you make some progress!  You can rent her by the hour (chf 15/hr), enjoying a large dedicated space to work. I already have a number of bobbins wound in neutral colours but will be happy to show you how to wind something from your thread stash if needed.

We are looking to have a similar setup in the US location but no guarantee we’ll have it in time for this October.

Other fun for the weekend:

Fat Quarter Dice Swap: This is a fun little game to exchange Fat Quarters. You’ll need to bring three Fat Quarters (18″ x 22″).

Secret Sister: You’ll be assigned another person in the group to be their Secret Sister. The objective is to provide quiet, “secret” encouragement, in the form of very small gifts or notes, throughout the weekend. The total amount to be spent on all of these little gifts together is chf 20/ $20 and we’ll provide lots of ideas to get you started. Secret Sisters will be revealed after dinner on Saturday evening.

Machine Servicing: On Thursday, I will be performing Basic Machine servicing (at special Peaks pricing of chf 55/ $55) to all who wish to have a little “tune-up” before getting those needles flying!

If there’s anything else you are dying to know, from how to clean your machine  (yes, that little metal bit comes off… 🙂 ) to how to figure out the quilt piecing lingo of a particular project, Clare and I are happy to help.

Afternoons are free time. Continue to work on your PhD’s/UFOs/PIGs, start a new project, have a massage, go for a walk. It’s up to you. There’s a hot tub too so be sure to pack your swimming costume! 🙂

Come join us in the Peaks!
