Despite being behind on many things of my life, I’ve made something new in my favourite colours.
Our Island Batik project this month is a blog hop. It’s called All Puffed Up and we’re all making puff quilts using different fabric provided by Island Batik. In addition to seeing some really creative ways to make this simple quilt, each week there’s an opportunity to win a fat quarter bundle of some of the fabrics being showcased in the projects by the Ambassadors.
For this project, we needed to use a particular fat quarter bundle from our first shipment from Island Batik. Mine was called Double Dutch, designed by Kathy Engle. I loved playing with these fabrics! My favourite colour is blue so I was over the moon rearranging these lovelies. I was able to use every one of the fabrics in the collection at least twice, some three times.
A Puff quilt, also called Bubble quilts or Biscuit quilts, was a new technique for me, made perhaps a bit more complicated because I wanted to do it on my longarm (hold my tea as I overthink this 😋). I pieced the top of this baby quilt in a grid fashion, using 5.5″ squares, making a pleat as I stitched the squares together. I used Shannon Cuddle dimple for the backing, in a beautiful matching blue. I pinned the backing to the top, as if I were simply going to make it self-binding, leaving most of the the bottom edge open. I mitered the corners and turned it right sides out. I loosely loaded it on my longarm. I sewed a vertical channel for two rows, stuff a row with the softest silky poly fibre-fil, then stitch horizontally to close the rows. The last row I needed to do on my DSM and then hand-stitched the bottom seam closed. It’s turned out to be a very snuggly, soft, squishy, baby quilt that finished at 30″ x 32″. My puffs seem a little big, more like big biscuits (normal biscuits at my house) but I like that it’s so nice & soft.
