Jack & Venus

jack, seam ripper

This is Jack.

Jack

Yes, as in Jack the Ripper. Not in the macabre way, though that is my humour & taste in books, it’s just my playful name for my seam ripper. Jack & I got to spend a lot of time together this week as I worked to finish my entry in the Make it Right Challenge by Art Gallery Fabrics & Angela Walters. The Challenge was to use the Right Angles panel designed by Angela Walters, with Art Gallery Pure Elements as fillers, and Aurifil threads.

I’ve been pushing the envelope with my quilting style lately. More specifically my colour choices & design ideas. I can’t say I’m going all hog wild on the modern bandwagon but I’ve definitely made a shift.

When I looked at this panel, my first thought was tiles. This lead me to determining how I interpret Modern. When I think of modern, I think of art. When I think of art, I think of my favourite statue, Venus de Milo.

I wasn’t sure how to do it but that’s never stopped me from jumping  in with both feet. The background was a bit of a beast with inset seams & all. I know how colour works together but my daughter is the artist with perspective. She helped by explaining how perspective works. I had to pretend her pencil was thread and I figured it out.

So here is my Venus. I’m pretty chuffed with the result. I also think I had a magic bobbin of Aurifil 50 wt thread. I love this stuff!

As this was an experiment for me, I was learning as I went along. It felt like for every seam I did, Jack & I ripped out two. And I STILL finished piecing the background with only one bobbin! As instructed, the only thread used was Aurifil. The entire quilt is quilted with 50wt Aurifil cotton.

Here is a closer shot of her body.

I’m linking up with Whoop Whoop Friday & Link a Finish Friday. Time for me to go make more cool stuff. 🙂

Happy Quilting!

Elita, This is lovely. What a clever idea to drape her skirt! It looks like you quilted her face… or did you embroider it? Congratulations on an original quilt.

Hi Ann, thanks for your kind comment. Venus is a separate piece altogether, appliquéd to the the background, and then her skirt is draped & stitched in strategic places. I lightly drew her face on the fabric and then stitched it by machine with a slightly darker thread, in what I interpreted as a sort of threadplay technique. It was a personal challenge, I enjoyed the process, and I love how she’s turned out.
