With the world beginning to get back to travel, Autumn session of Patchwork in the Peaks will see us working on a pattern to help us get organised. Many of us are no stranger to Sara Lawson of Sew Sweetness, as we’ve previously used a pattern from this talented pattern maker. We find her patterns to be very well-illustrated and fully detailed to give everyone the confidence to try something new.

We will be making her lovely pattern called Chickadee Backpack. This  roomy bag pattern will have us using a variety of techniques including installing zippers, making mesh pockets, and using foam as a stabiliser. It’s a great pattern to use that focus fabric you’ve been holding onto, waiting for the perfect way to showcase it. It can be a great travel case, backpack, or even a diaper bag!

The finished size is 12” long x 15” tall x 5” deep (30cm x 38cm x 13cm).

You can see more details and other variations here. A supply list will be sent in advance and you can purchase the more specific hardware as a kit with registration.

Sleep Masks

To carry on with our traveling theme, we’ll be offering a short tutorial on how to make your own sleep mask in a variety of sweet shapes.

As always, these projects are optional. You are perfectly welcome to bring anything you want to work on! 🙂

In addition to all this creativity, we’ll have the usual lovely dinners made by someone else, hot tub, massages onsite by Morzine Massage, Dice Swap with fat quarters, Orphan Block/Project Exchange Box, goodies & gadgets from The Craft House and more to get your creative juices going.

What will you need to bring? All the bits & pieces you’ll need to work on your projects! I will be happy to help you in any way I can. We already have pressing stations and cutting stations with the necessary tools, along with a design board. The Craft Shop will be onsite with a variety of sewing notions, and there will be a selection of Aurifil threads and Quilters Dream batting available. Anything you need from The Shop you you can put it on your Tab, to be invoiced after Peaks.

We also have Suki the Juki, our sit-down longarm, to help you make some progress!  You can rent her by the hour (chf 15/hr), enjoying a large and newly renovated dedicated space to work. I already have a number of bobbins wound in neutral colours but will be happy to show you how to wind something from your thread stash if needed.

Need a bit more encouragement? Your own Secret Sister will be there to cheer you on! You’ll be one too and we’ll have lots of ideas to help you help encourage each other. Part of the fun is the secrecy!

Other fun for the weekend:

Orphan Block/Project Exchange Box: Bring any Orphan Blocks or Projects that you just know you’re not going to use use or finish to put in the Exchange Box. You don’t have to bring one to take one but many of us know we need to just pass on that project we’ve fallen out of love with. Let it go home with someone else to cherish!

Fat Quarter Dice Swap: This is a fun little game to exchange Fat Quarters. You’ll need to bring three Fat Quarters (18″ x 22″).

Secret Sister: You’ll be assigned another person in the group to be their Secret Sister. The objective is to provide quiet, “secret” encouragement, in the form of very small gifts or notes, throughout the weekend. We’ll provide lots of ideas to get you started. Secret Sisters will be revealed after dinner on Saturday evening.

Machine Servicing: On Thursday, I will be performing Basic Machine servicing (at special Peaks pricing of chf 50) to all who wish to have a little “tune-up” before getting those needles flying!

If there’s anything else you are dying to know, from how to clean your machine  (yes, that little metal bit comes off… 🙂 ) to how to figure out the quilt piecing lingo of a particular project, I’m happy to help.

Afternoons are free time. Continue to work on your PhD’s/UFOs/PIGs, start a new project, have a massage, go for a walk. It’s up to you. There’s a hot tub too so be sure to pack your swimming costume! 🙂

Come join us in the Peaks!
