And just in time to get under the wire for the Blogger’s Quilt Festival! Let me start by saying a huge thank you to Amy and all of the great sponsors who make this possible to showcase our work.
My entry for the Large Quilt Section of the Blogger’s Quilt Festival is The Uni Quilt, made for my lovely daughter, who is now starting her second year at university in the US. Yes, I’m a bit late. But great things take time!

I’ve actually been waiting all week to get a nice photo outside. It’s been pretty foggy & awful most days but yesterday was clear enough so I took my chance. And of course today was gloriously sunny.
This quilt has been a year in the making and she’s been very patient while others came before hers. I started with this:

My daughter chose the pattern & the fabrics. I used the pattern for “New York Beauty Simplified” from the book by Linda Hahn. I figured it would be a snap. The pattern from Linda’s book is easy to follow but then I decided to change things up a bit, making the blocks a bit bigger, and the overall quilt size bigger. Miss F wanted a nice size for her bed at uni. It took some trial & error to work out how much to enlarge to get an 8″ block from the original 6″. I used washable foundation papers for the spires because I wasn’t going to pick all that paper out! 🙂 With a lot of help from my mother, I finally ended up with 88 blocks:

I longarm quilted it pretty heavily, between the spires and across the arcs with a curved cross-hatch design, making four thread changes with each pass. My favourite colours in 50wt Aurifil turned out beautifully. The wool batting makes it puff up nicely.

Miss F says her roommate wants one. Ummmm, not getting it like this, though I would make the pattern again. 🙂

Happy Quilting!
It’s a pretty complex design for being simplified. I love the scale and the colors. The outdoor picture with the leaves really came out nice and a bit of overcast is better than harsh sun anyway. Really lovely
